The UN elects Iran to the disarmament commission. No. Seriously.
In other business, the following delegations were elected as Vice-chairpersons, by acclamation: Chile, Uruguay and Iran. Coly Seck of Senegal was elected to serve as Rapporteur. Both the Commission Chairman and the Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs urged the speedy election of the Chairperson of Working Group I on the nuclear weapons-related item, so that deliberations could begin on Wednesday, 12 April, following the general debate.
Iran....UN Disarmament Commission.... Well, I guess if Sudan could serve on the Human Rights Commission this shouldn't be all that surprising. Still the blatant hypocrasy of this is mind numbing.
Iran's declaration that it enriched its first batch of uranium is unlikely to spur a divided U.N. Security Council to take any substantive action sooner than May on the question of Iran's nuclear ambitions, council diplomats said on Wednesday.
And it's certainly not like they're being vague about their intentions.
Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reiterated Iran's goal of "wiping Israel off the map." Speaking at a conference of visiting heads of Arab terrorist groups operating in areas under Palestinian Authority control, Ahmadinejad said, "Whether you like it or not, the Zionist regime is on the road to being eliminated."
Far be it from me to accuse the UN of anti-semitism....[/sarcasm]
Still the question begs asking, what will it take before President Bush stops wagering the fate of western civilization on the UN's ability to do anything more than fester in its own corruption and cover its ass?
